ISD Functional Capacity
INTERBORO SCHOOL DISTRICT • INTERBORO HIGH SCHOOL
At the onset of 2022, the Interboro High School Building turns 50 years old and although it still appears clean and function- al, that is more a testament to the ISD staff’s diligent housekeeping and maintenance than the building’s actual condition. From an Infrastructure perspective, much of the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems in the building are original which means a majority of the components are more than double their expected lifespan. Complete replacement of these systems is needed to improve safety, lighting, health, energy efficiency and decrease ongoing costs. The building envelope is also in need of upgrades and repairs to increase energy efficiency and reduce potential for water and air infiltration which contributes to poor building health issues.
The goal of these infrastructure improvements is to provide good lighting, high indoor air quality, outside views and overall positive environment to support the needs of the 21st century learner.
Similar issues exist relative to the building layout; small, poorly lit classrooms and lab spaces stifle learning. Increased program requirements over the past 50 years leaves the building lacking available space to conduct the desired curriculum extras and electives. Some existing spaces have already been divided or converted from intended uses to cover the basic state requirements. Many classrooms completely lack outside light or views. From a high level, the teachers and admin- istration are doing an excellent job making do with what they have been given, however, the proposed renovation and addition project will allow them to thrive in learning conditions worthy of their potential.

Proposed Library Conversion to Student Commons
The current cafeteria with no direct exterior access is transformed into a light-filled two-story student space for academic collaboration. Construction will include a cafeteria addition, which provides direct exterior access.

Modifying the classroom layouts from triangular-shaped rooms to rectangular spaces improves the educational settings of these instructional spaces and provides adjacent learning commons for student collaboration.
Improved security practices and increased natural light allow for 21st century collaboration spaces to be interwoven throughout the school.

New school entrance provides a safe and secure way for students, faculty, staff, and visitors to enter the building through enhanced security measures.
The transformed learning spaces in the high school renovation project will cultivate educational experiences for Interboro students to be future leaders in the mid-21st century. The open spaces foster student growth as agile and adaptable learners who will pursue multiple pathways in their post-secondary life.

Students will emerge as engineers and designers, researchers and problem solvers, thespians and artists, as they engage in authentic experiences in the modernized, flexible classrooms.
The learning commons, STEM Labs, and state-of-the art auditorium will showcase the innovation, collaboration and creativity of students and educators who will now be capable to evolve with ever-changing world of work.
